Oscars Music Will Be 'Very Different,' Pharrell Says

Producer talks to MTV News about collaborating with award-winning composer Hans Zimmer.

This Sunday, super producer Pharrell Williams and Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer will show the world what they've been cooking up since the December announcement they would join forces as the musical consultants for the 84th Academy Awards.

"You know, Hans called me and he said that [Oscars Producer] Brian Grazer had asked him to come on as a consultant and effectively score the music or whatever," he explained to MTV News. "And Hans was like, 'I can't do that. ... I'd do that if like I had, like, Pharrell.' [Grazer's] like, 'OK, get Pharrell on the phone.' That's the story he told me. I got the call from Hans and he told them he wanted to do it with me, and so I pleasantly accepted and we've just been working ever since."

While Pharrell wanted to keep the collaboration as top-secret as possible, he did give some insight into what the two have in store for the big night, which will be hosted by Billy Crystal.

"Well, you're gonna have to watch the show and see, we can't give it away. That's what's so funny about interviews. They always want to know what you're about to do," he explained. "It's like some of us love you know music and art that blindsides, comes out of nowhere with a crazy impact. And then sometimes you talk about things because you want to warm up the feeling before the huge impact.

"But this is another one of those things where we keep things under wraps," he continued. "But it's cool; it's interesting; it's very different. Definitely there's an homage to the tradition of how the music was done traditionally. ... [but] we're different, and when given an opportunity and it's our opportunity, Hans and I agreed we just would do it from the perspective of people who love music and love making music and respect it, giving back to what gave us so much, which is music and film."

'Wanderlust': The Reviews Are In!

Critics are a bit grossed out by the raunchy comedy but still charmed by leading man Paul Rudd.
By Kara Warner

Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston in "Wanderlust"
Photo: Universal

Fans of the big-screen pairing of Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd have likely been waiting for the two likable actors to reunite since their 1998 romantic dramedy "The Object of My Affection." At long last, that wait is over with the release of "Wanderlust," a comedy in which Aniston and Rudd play a stressed-out Manhattan couple who end up traveling through a hippie-ish community that teaches them a lesson or two about what's really important in life.

The critical response is at 55 percent "Fresh" over at Rotten Tomatoes, with some folks enjoying the awkward humor and unflappable charm of Paul Rudd and others having issues with Rudd and Aniston's schtick. Read on as we frolic through the "Wanderlust" reviews!

The Irresistible Charm of Paul Rudd
"Paul Rudd is the best friend a movie comedy can have. He always delivers the goods and something extra, usually something wild and weirdly wonderful. In 'Wanderlust,' Rudd lets the funny fly. Like the movie he's in, Rudd only seems normal. Inside, it's all deliriously unhinged. Rudd plays George, an uptight Wall Street suit squeezed into a Manhattan micro-loft with his documentarian wife Linda (Jennifer Aniston) until the recession shuts them both down. Off they go to Georgia where his idiot brother (Ken Marino, the film's co-writer) offers him a job in his porta-potty business. Unacceptable. So George and Linda take shelter in Elysium, a commune where craziness reigns along with pot, acid, dodgy hygiene and free love. When the luscious Eva (Malin Akerman) offers to get it on with him, George unravels his straight laces. Here comes the Rudd time capsule moment: In a mirror, George rehearses talking dirty to Eva, taking the word 'dick' and stretching it into syllables of near-pornographic hilarity. It helps that Rudd is once again working with director and co-writer David Wain, as he did in 'Role Models' and the immortal 2001 indie 'Wet Hot American Summer.' " — Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

The Comedy and Quirk Factors
"In sophisticated comedy, what's funny is the tension between proper manners and the nasty or sexy subtext. Whereas in low comedy, there are no manners, and the nasty or sexy subtext is right there on the surface. And then there's 'Wanderlust,' in which the subtext is blasted through megaphones — the characters say so insanely much you want to scream. The satire is as broad as a battleship and equally bombarding. But it takes guts to do a comedy this big without gross-out slapstick, and the writers and the actors are all in. ... You say it sounds like a bunch of stereotypes — and 40-year-old stereotypes? The defense concedes the point. It's not fresh terrain. But this tribe of hippies is also a tribe of marvelously inventive comic actors doing a fair amount of inspired improvisation and grooving on the mindset." — David Edelstein, NPR

The Final Word, Pro-Con-Pro Style
"The role of an uptight fish out of water is what Rudd was born for, and he plays George with the congeniality and improvisatorial brio for which he's become deservedly famous. He and Theroux, who's barely recognizable beneath a thatch of long hair and a beard, deliver the most well-earned laughs in 'Wanderlust,' which otherwise traffics in tired jokes about menstrual cycles, placenta soup and rubbing your fingers together instead of clapping. ... Between this film and last summer's 'Horrible Bosses,' Aniston's coyness — starring in explicit movies without having to be explicit herself — seems to be becoming her stock in trade. It's not a particularly commendable one, and 'Wanderlust' does little to disprove that she's still a star more suited to TV rather than the big screen. As for Rudd, he still has charm to burn, even playing a type he's long since outgrown. Like George observing the overgrown children of Elysium, it might be time for Rudd to move on." — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

"The production has all the style and subtlety — and, admittedly, the exuberance — of TV sketch material. A psychedelic sequence makes Madonna's halftime show look like high art. Both the straight and hippie realms are populated by parallel groups of fevered eccentrics; the cast includes Mr. Marino, Justin Theroux, Malin Akerman, Joe Lo Truglio, Kathryn Hahn, Kerri Kenney, Lauren Ambrose and Linda Lavin. Alan Alda is the commune's venerable founder, Carvin, whose brain long ago failed the acid test. 'Wanderlust' is nothing if not strenuous, strident and gross, and most of it fails the comedy test." — Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal

"There are so many things to feel guilty about liking in the pure and prurient guilty pleasure that is 'Wanderlust.' Starring Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston, this is a comedy of no manners about finding your bliss and escaping the modern grind. The laughter is served up naughty and nice, and frequently au naturel, earning it an R rating when perhaps RR (really raunchy) would have been more appropriate. Appropriateness, however, has pretty much been jettisoned by the filmmakers, who have opted instead for the good-fun-found-in-bad-taste tradition of 'The Hangover.' Directed by David Wain and co-written with his frequent comic collaborator, Ken Marino, the film is, overall, a very wobbly affair starting with all the dangling naked body parts that greet George (Rudd) and Linda (Aniston) when the couple pulls into a free-love commune they mistake for a B&B." — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

Oscars 2012: Our Biggest Burning Questions

Only time will tell just how many statuettes will 'The Artist' take home and whether talking puppets will grace the Oscar stage.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Photo: Weinstein Company

In the days leading up to Sunday's Academy Awards, the night's six biggest categories have clear favorites. But many of our burning questions remain unanswered. Even without the potential for surprises built into the major races, there's still plenty left to leave us speechless.

Here are our biggest burning questions heading into Oscar night:

How big will "The Artist" be?
At this point, few can really doubt that the ode to silent film is going to win, and it's going to win big. With Best Picture more or less locked for "The Artist," only one question remains: How many statuettes will it take home? Its star Jean Dujardin is poised to take Best Actor and Michel Hazanavicius should take Best Director, since that award tends to precede Best Picture. But the film has many nominations in technical categories that are still undecided.

Will the Muppets surprise?
Soon after Eddie Murphy stepped down as host, an internet campaign gained steam supporting the Muppets hot off their big-screen comeback as replacements. The Academy ultimately went with Billy Crystal for the hosting gig, but a nomination for the song "Man or Muppet" gave fans hope for a big musical number during the ceremony. Alas, neither it nor its sole competitor, "Real in Rio," will get live performances, but the Muppets could surprise with an appearance bigger than their scheduled presentation.

Is "A Separation" a lock for foreign film?
With a screenwriting nomination to its credit, the Iranian film stands far in the lead for Best Foreign Language Film, but bigger upsets have occurred. "The Lives of Others" stole the thunder of Guillermo del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth," and "The Secret in Their Eyes" beat out both "A Prophet" and "The White Ribbon." This could be a favorite that may face a disappointing surprise.

Who will end the "In Memoriam" montage?
Based on prestige, the honor goes to Elizabeth Taylor, who died a month after last year's ceremony. Buzz and tragedy levels say it will go to Whitney Houston. One should not forget Steve Jobs, whose involvement with Pixar certainly qualifies him for a mention, but may be too tangential to be included. It's a morbid question, but one people genuinely wonder about.

How will Billy Crystal do?
As a last minute stand-in for Murphy, the Academy Awards' second most experience host is getting another shot after eight years away from the gig. But will his usual Oscar routine be enough to hold the audience's attention after all these years? The day-after assessment of hosts usually amounts to a thumb up or a thumb down, but where Crystal will land after his ninth outing remains to be seen.

What burning questions do you have about the Oscars? Let us know in the comments section!

I always like watching the show from this point on because this is when the show really starts in my opinion! The contestants haven't seen their families since the show started so it's always cool to see them reunite!

Lindzi
This girl seems to be the whole package: down to earth, fun, easy going and she is cute! Her parents are rad! They are super fun; who wouldn't want to have in-laws like them? She won't have any issue meeting a guy after this season!

Kasey B.
I have liked Kasey and Lidzi since day one. I agree with Kasey's dad being skeptical of the process. What dad wouldn't be when four girls are dating this guy? But Kacey's parents had a strong opinion regarding the possibility of the two living together; it's 2012 not 1950... Sorry no one wants their in-laws telling them how to live their life.

Nicki
I think Nicki is a super sweet girl but I just don't see her with Ben in the end. That date reminded me of the movie Fools rush in. Ben was a city guy in a cowboy hat out of his element!

Courtney
This was probably the fakest most produced hometown date I have seen in a long time! Courtney's dad says that marriage is a gamble and ten seconds later says that he wants some grandkids. As for the wedding ceremony, that was a total cut and paste from Ashley Hebert's season.

Next week Ben will leave his comfort zone again when he travels to Switzerland. Oh and we also will get to see a preview for Emily Maynard's upcoming season.

The Marchesa Fashion Show Was Star-Studded!

It's a wrap for Fall 2012 collections that just showed in NYC ? and the hottest stars sat front-row for all the glitz and glamour! Speaking of, celeb-favorite brand Marchesa did not disappoint when it came to star power and gorgeous gowns galore! The FIJI Water-sponsored show at The Plaza pulled in big names like Stacy Keibler, Bar Rafaeli, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Petra Nemcova, Taylor Momsen, Olivia Palermo, Rachel Zoe and more!

After catching up with old friends (Stacy and Bar were caught gossiping ? about boyfriends, perhaps?), sipping on front-row-present FIJI Water and cutting the tension (Rachel and her fallen chum, former assistant Brad Goreski, were sitting only six seats apart), the star-studded front row left wowed by the glamour and gorgeousness that is Marchesa.

"They never fail to disappoint," said Bar to In Touch, calling design duo Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig "amazing." Adds Jenna about her "favorite" designers, "Marchesa just has gorgeous ? gorgeous! ? beautifully made gowns." Oh, and P.S.: Rachel Zoe took lots of pics of her favorites, so hopefully we see them on one of her A-list clients soon! Can anyone say Anne Hathaway for the Oscars?

TOWIE cast moan about lack of screen time?

If you?ve been watching the latest series of TOWIE you may have noticed the original cast haven?t had much screen time and aside from Joey and Arg, none of them have featured in any of the major storylines.

Instead Cara Kilbey, Ricky Rayment and Billi Mucklow have taken centre stage and when it?s not their turn Mario and Lucy step in.

Well, this hasn?t gone unnoticed by Jessica Wright, Gemma Collins, Sam Faiers and Lauren Goodger and the ladies far from happy about it.

A source told TheDaily Star:

?The oldies have complained. The fact that poor Gemma's been upstaged by a dog says it all.?

Apparently Ms Collins has had just 2 minutes and 20 seconds on screen this series (not that she's counting or anything) while Lucy and Mario?s new puppy, Bentley has had a whopping 2 minutes and 40 seconds. Aw, shame.

When Jersey Shore?s Nicole "Snooki? Polizzi and Deena Cortese were first labeled "meatballs? by their castmate Ronnie Ortiz- Magro, it wasn?t exactly a compliment. ?We were fighting, and he said, ?You guys look like meatballs,?? recalled the diminutive duo at an exclusive photo shoot with In Touch at The Meatball Shop in Brooklyn, N.Y. ?We decided to turn it around and make it positive. Now girls with curves want to be called ??meatballs!??

Not surprisingly, the renowned restaurant was the perfect setting for the party partners, who spiced up their cooking lesson from co-owners Daniel Holzman and Michael Chernow with their sassy sense of humor. ?It feels like an old lady breast!? said Snooki, 24, smushing (in the original sense of the word) the raw meat. ?It?s in my fingernails; I?ll save some for later!? joked Deena, 25.

And they soon proved they could stand the heat in the kitchen. ?I used to cook with my mom and grandma,? bragged Snooki. After their work was done, they sat for a well-earned meal. As Deena rightly put it, ?Who doesn?t love meatballs?

Ethan, who has been battling Hodgkin?s lymphoma, rode along with his longtime girlfriend ? and fellow Survivor contestant - Jenna Morasca, proving his dedication to raising awareness and finding a cure. The event, which took place at Equinox locations in NYC, Long Island, Washington D.C., Chicago, San Francisco and LA and drew nearly 10,000 participants, raised $7.7 million.

?With the dollars raised by Cycle for Survival from 2007 through 2011, we have initiated 25 clinical trials and research studies on rare cancers that might not have otherwise received funding,? said Dr. Gary Schwartz, chief of the Melanoma and Sarcoma Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. ?We are incredibly grateful for this year?s record-breaking donation and are looking forward to quickly activating new studies and trials to develop new therapeutic approaches to benefit patients worldwide.?

Woody Harrelson Avoids Being 'Phony Drunk' In 'Hunger Games'

But he also didn't want to actually drink during filming — like he had done before — to play Haymitch.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Anyone familiar with "The Hunger Games" books knows the character Haymitch Abernathy is mostly memorable for one thing: drunkenness. Sure, his character has a more multifaceted arc over the course of Suzanne Collins' trilogy, but in speaking of the first book and film adaptation, Haymitch's most recognizable trait is his near-constant intoxication.

When MTV News caught up with Woody Harrelson recently, the man who will be bringing the District 12 victor and mentor to life via the big-screen adaptation on March 23, we him how he approached his character's inebriation.

"It's an intriguing thing for me to play, because it's not something I've had that much opportunity to play," Harrelson said. "I was a little bit worried about looking phony, that phony drunk thing. Some Method actors might go drunk onscreen; I can't do that. I tried it one time," he admitted. "When I was doing 'Indecent Proposal,' I had this one scene, and I was supposed to be really drunk, contesting Robert Redford's love for Demi Moore, and I got smashed because I was supposed to be, so I rationalized it, and that wasn't a pleasant experience."

Harrelson said he and "Games" director Gary Ross spent time coming up with the right level of inebriation, a point that suited the character but did not completely detract or distract from the story.

"There was a thing with me and Gary trying to decide the level of drunkenness in any given scene, and I was always pushing for more drunk, and he didn't want me to be drunk in every scene," he said. "He was always pulling back, and I was always pushing for more just because I think it's kind of funny and interesting. Knowing Gary, he got the right balance."

'Safe House' Rules Holiday Weekend Box Office

Denzel Washington's latest ekes out a win over 'Ghost Rider' sequel and 'The Vow.'
By Ryan J. Downey

Denzel Washington topped the box office over the holiday weekend as a comic book sequel flamed out.

Two holdovers from last week, "Safe House" and "The Vow," were neck and neck for the top spot during the four-day Presidents' Day weekend and helped push box-office receipts to 11 percent over the same period last year. Washington's "Safe House" was #1, with a four-day total of $28.4 million. "The Vow" followed just behind with $26.6 million, according to studio estimates.

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" was #3 with $26.4 million thanks to a very strong Monday. "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" opened at #4 with $25.7 million, followed by the debut of the Reese Witherspoon-starring "This Means War" at #5 with $20.4 million.

"Safe House" has made $82.6 million thus far, making it the second-best 10-day run for Washington, just behind "American Gangster." The drama looks likely to pass the $100 million mark, which will make it the fourth movie in the 57-year-old actor's career to do so. "The Vow" has earned $88.5 million thus far, which means it is now the highest-grossing movie ever for the Sony/ Screen Gems brand.

The second "Ghost Rider" film, based on the Marvel Comics antihero, opened with less than half of the 2007 original's $45.4 million debut. Nicolas Cage reprises the role of Johnny Blaze in "Spirit of Vengeance," which, despite featuring a darker take on the supernatural motorcycle rider (courtesy of the directing duo behind "Crank"), suffered even worse reviews than its predecessor. At press time, "Ghost Rider" sat at 27 percent on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer, which averages reviews from critics, while the sequel sat at 15 percent.

The weekend's other new wide release, "The Secret World of Arrietty," was #9 on the box-office chart with $8.1 million. The debut for the animated film, which features English-speaking actors recording new performances in the Japanese film, met with Disney's reported expectations. Similarly, the romance-meets-action of "This Means War" wasn't far off from the debuts of similar fare like "Knight & Day," "The Tourist" or "Killers," all of which had mostly negative reviews and opened between $15 and $20 million.

"Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menance" in 3-D suffered a bigger second-week decline than the similar 3-D re-release of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast," but still added enough to the prequel's all-time box-office total to push it past the original "Star Wars" to become the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time. "Phantom Menace" made $10.2 million over the four-day weekend for a domestic theater total of $36 million for the 3-D version.

Two smaller but critically acclaimed pictures continued to benefit from awards season momentum over the weekend. The latest picture from Alexander Payne ("Sideways"), "The Descendants," starring George Clooney, passed the $75 million mark, while silent film "The Artist" passed $25 million. Both movies are up for Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards, among other nominations.

Amazing Spider-Man Makes His Mark In New York

MTV News joins Spidey supporters to spread the friendly neighborhood web-slinger's insignia all across Manhattan.
By Josh Wigler

NEW YORK — Spider-Man needs support. Sure, he's better off than most: Spinning webs and climbing walls does have its perks. But a strong superhero is nothing without a strong base of supporters championing his every move — something that isn't exactly easy for Spidey to accomplish with the Daily Bugle painting him as a menace on every other front page.

Perhaps MTV News can show the hero in a different light. Last Friday, we were invited to join a small group of passionate supporters to spread the mark of Spider-Man all across New York City. Our mission: to travel to predetermined locations throughout Manhattan to tag specific walls with the Amazing Spider-Man's famous insignia. "That's kind of odd," you might be saying to yourself. But there was nothing odd about it to Abigail Flynn, one of the carefully selected Spidey supporters out in full force on behalf of the amazing web-slinger.

"We're supporting Spider-Man," Flynn told MTV News of the campaign. "We're putting up the mark of the Spider-Man around the city to spread awareness and spread his message."

Fellow web-head Walter Sojda added, "He's fighting for the little guy. We have to show that in New York, we care about Spider-Man. We're supporting him here."

New York isn't the only place Spider-Man has recently found support. All last week, the superhero's message was spread throughout five other American cities, including Los Angeles, Seattle and Atlanta. Clearly, the hero's national awareness is on the rise — good timing, no doubt, considering he has a movie on the way!

Spreading the mark of Spider-Man isn't the only thing that has our spider senses tingling here at MTV News. Early last week, MTV Splash Page received a mysterious backpack in the mail, with no explanation as to its origin other than a haphazardly attached piece of duct tape reading "Property of Peter Parker." Spidey's supporters were tight-lipped when asked about Parker's identity, so the connection between the two remains unclear for now.

Here's something that is clear: Despite what the Bugle says, there's a whole lot of love out there for your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man — and Manhattan has the mark to prove it.

Are you following the mark of Spider-Man? Let us know in the comments or hit me up on Twitter at @roundhoward!

Tulisa must be the best boss ever! Her PA?s had her name tattooed on his ankle?

As we all know, Tulisa currently has a tattoo on her arm saying ?the female boss? but perhaps it would be a bit more apt if it said ?the amazing boss? instead. After all we assume she is one as her PA Gareth Varey has just had her name tattooed on his ankle.

The pair have been friends for a long time and both had inkings done on their bodies the other day, though we don?t know if the X Factor judge reciprocated her pal?s actions in the same way.

Gareth showed off his new design when he and Tulisa landed in Miami yesterday where they?ve jetted to after a trip to LA.

'Hunger Games' Star Wes Bentley's Beard 'Did Half The Work' For Him

Bentley, who plays Seneca Crane, tells MTV News his beard 'took two hours to groom every day.'
By Kara Warner with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Photo: MTV News

For those of us who've been following the news surrounding all the comings and goings of the lucky "Hunger Games" castmembers, one of the most intriguing is Wes Bentley in the role of Seneca Crane. Not only does Bentley bring a sense of gravitas to the character, but as we've seen in the released photos, his costume and makeup design is especially interesting.

MTV News recently caught up with the "American Beauty" actor to discuss his pivotal role in the film and how much fun he had sporting that curiously shaped beard, which, sadly, he no longer has.

"I would have loved to have kept the beard but that beard took two hours to groom every day," Bentley said. "I don't want to spend that much time in the bathroom."

We then brought up the fact that the beard has caused quite a stir among fans, spawning its own Facebook page as well as our own tongue-in-cheek interview with the fancy fuzz.

"I saw that. I had no idea my beard was so clever," Bentley said of the interview, adding that he is flattered by all the attention the beard has received. "It's such a cool look. Ve Neill, the makeup designer, did such an amazing job. It's exciting that it's getting that kind of attention."

Bentley insisted that all the credit for the design of the beard goes to Neill, and that all he did was grow out everything as much as it could go.

"I usually come to set with a beard and my hair as long as I can get it so there are options. I saw Ve before we started shooting and she was excited I had a beard because she had something special in mind. It was all her. She went at it for like three hours trying to find the right shape; it was cool."

Bentley joked that having the peculiar design on his face did half of his acting work for him and that he sometimes wishes he kept it.

"The beard did half the work," he joked, later admitting that he got a few curious glances whenever he ventured out to run errands during filming.

"I did go into Target a few times late at night with the beard, because my son was there, it was a little odd buying baby formula with this beard and some of the makeup on."

What questions do you have for Wes Bentley's beard? Let us know in the comments section.

'This Means War' Stars Debate Love Triangles

'They make life more exciting,' Chris Pine tells MTV News at premiere.
By Kara Warner

Tom Hardy, Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine in "This Means War"
Photo: 20th Century Fox

Woe is the woman entangled in a complicated, messy love triangle — particularly one that involves easy-on-the-eyes actors Chris Pine ("Star Trek") and Tom Hardy ("Warrior," "Inception"). This is the dilemma Reese Witherspoon faces as lucky lady in love with two very-eligible CIA operatives in "This Means War," released Friday (February 17). Hopefully, you can read our sarcasm, because we don't feel any ounce of sympathy for Witherspoon, as she had the best of both worlds working on the film.

There are, of course, pitfalls to real-life love triangles, so when MTV News hit up the premiere of the new action-filled romantic comedy, we asked the stars to debate the pros and cons of being caught between two eligible romantic interests.

"I guess the pros of a love triangle is that they make life more exciting," Pine offered.

Abigail Spencer, who plays Hardy's character's ex-wife, said, "I think there's only cons," adding "I think the only pro is that you might discover who you actually like by having a distraction but it forces you to make a decision."

"I can't even answer that question," Hardy admitted. "I'm trying to think of too many literal answers."

Chelsea Handler, meanwhile, provided a thoughtful answer to our poll: "You get to have sex with two people simultaneously, but at some point, you have to tell the truth to both people so they're OK with it, and then you have to pick one," she said. "It should only happen for a myopic period of time."

"I wouldn't know from any personal experiences," Witherspoon chimed in. "But from the movie, I think it's very complicated dating best friends."

The film's director, McG, admitted to speaking from personal experience: "That's difficult to ask because I've only been on the losing end of any love triangle I've been a part of because all of my friends are super good-looking."

'This Means War': The Reviews Are In!

Critics aren't buying into the love triangle between Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy.
By Kara Warner

Tom Hardy and Chris Pine in "This Means War"
Photo: 20th Century Fox

"This Means War" has all the makings of a perfect romantic comedy/ action flick, including the very attractive and high-caliber stars Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy, the capable direction of McG, comic relief from Chelsea Handler and a script from the guys whose combined talents have brought us "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," "Sherlock Holmes," "Role Models" and "Just Go With It."

The story revolves around two best friends and highly skilled CIA agents who fall in love with the same woman and go to war with each other in an effort to win her heart. We imagine the filmmakers set out to make a fun, if only slightly farfetched, popcorn flick, but the critical masses couldn't seem to suspend their disbelief. The film has a 30 percent Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Read on as we fight through the "This Means War" reviews!

The Story
"Having great-looking stars who have the added bonus of actually being able to act makes the noisy romp 'This Means War' more tolerable that it ought to be. It's essentially a love-triangle version of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," rendered even more bombastic in the hands of "Charlie's Angels" director McG. (Simon Kinberg, who wrote the 2005 film that spawned Brangelina, shares script credit here with Timothy Dowling.) So you've got your sport utility vehicles tumbling in slow motion, your gravity-defying shootouts and your obligatory explosions galore. Naturally, the premise is the most high-concept, contrived confection: Two CIA agents (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy) who happen to be best friends also happen to fall in love with the same woman (Reese Witherspoon), who has no idea these guys know each other. They promise their shared pursuit won't ruin their friendship, but good luck with all that." — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press

The Bromance Factor
"The relationship that truly sizzles — from the sentiment to the satire — is the one between FDR (Pine) and Tuck (Hardy), with Pine and Hardy pulling off one of the better bromances in recent memory. ... Hardy ('Inception') and Pine ('Star Trek') are the heart of the film — proving to be excellent opposing sides of the same coin. Both balance their characters' cynicism with a certain sweetness, their chemistry fairly crackling, electrifying the screen almost any time they're sharing it, whether taking down a bad guy or squabbling about who is more lovable (it's a tossup). With Lauren, on the other hand, they are basically gentlemen, so not electrifying." — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

The Suspension of Disbelief Factor, or Lack Therof
"And in the film's opening minutes, it feels as if that might be the desired effect: It's loaded with overblown action chestnuts like from-the-hip gunplay, people dangling from the sides of skyscrapers and a gruff commanding officer. (That would be Angela Bassett, who shows up periodically to growl at her charges in a role that might have been hilarious had anyone thought to write anything legitimately funny for her.) But a good parody takes a finesse that isn't in the vocabulary of McG, a bargain-basement Michael Bay more concerned with cool than coherence. Instead we get utter nonsense like a video store with a database that conveniently includes customer photos for the CIA to tap into. (Related: These characters are, in 2012, going to a video store?) In another scene, FDR wrestles on the floor with a small dog that has just attacked him, as Lauren stands 5 feet away, oblivious. The Farrelly brothers should sue the producers not for stealing the scene outright from 'There's Something About Mary,' but for imitating it so badly." — Ian Buckwalter, NPR

The Final Word
"Part spy caper, part buddy picture, part romantic comedy, part raunchy-girl-talk sex farce, This Means War has been assembled with all the haphazardness of an amateur science experiment. The project was directed by the amped-up industry go-getter McG (Charlie's Angels), and it's had a long trial-and-error history. The initial script dates back a century — or at least about a decade — and the string of famous guys who didn't take the dual lead male roles reportedly includes Bradley Cooper, Seth Rogen, Sam Worthington, and, stretching even further back, Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence. All this fiddling and fumbling shows on the screen. And yet, and yet ... I confess I enjoyed everything that's all over the place about the finished product. 'This Means War' may have been hammered together by brute Hollywood force, but there's this going for it: It's game to throw in anything that'll keep the motor running." — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

'Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance': The Reviews Are In!

Most critics have panned the Nicolas Cage flick, citing mediocrity as its biggest crime.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Nicolas Cage in "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance"
Photo: Columbia Pictures

Nicolas Cage's Ghost Rider has received a makeover from "Crank" directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, but that's not enough to keep the critics happy. Most have panned "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance," citing mediocrity as its biggest crime.

We've rounded up a sample of the reviews of the film, so you can decide whether you'll be making the trip to hell this weekend.

The Story
"It's been five years since stunt rider Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) signed on the bloody line and became Beelzebub's flaming-biker bounty hunter. Sniffing out evil and sucking the souls out of bad guys whenever his head catches on fire, Blaze finally wants rid of his cursed vigilante alter ego." — Paul Bradshaw, TotalFilm.com

The Lead
"Returning as the eponymous not-quite-hero, Nicolas Cage spends stretches of the film on autopilot while waiting for scenes he deems worthy of his particular brand of crazy. They're not frequent enough to please the Cage aficionado, but sequences in which the twitchy, inappropriately giddy actor tries to choke back transformations into a bloodthirsty skeleton-on-fire are welcome in a film where often-charismatic costars Ciarán Hinds and Idris Elba are singing off-key." — John Defore, The Hollywood Reporter

The Directors
"Of course, the 3-D is only of any use whenever the camera stays still, but as with the previous helming efforts of Neveldine/Taylor (the more proudly provocative 'Crank' 1 & 2 and 'Gamer'), the action is often either jittery or roving, shot from behind with the swerving rhythm that comes from one filming on rollerblades, thus doing the format few favors. Their glib touches litter the screenplay, from quips about YouTube and the odd moment approximating a video game glitch to the aforementioned throwaway shot of Ghost Rider taking a flaming leak and nodding to the camera amid the unlikely inferno." — William Goss, Film.com

The Supporting Cast
"It's even hard to fully enjoy the mostly-great Ciarán Hinds as the Devil, a role he should be perfectly suited for. Unlike everyone else, he's obviously trying to hold back and not look ridiculous, but that's also tough considering how poorly his dialogue is written.

Similarly, young Fergus Riordan may not be quite as annoying as Thomas Horn, but he introduces the same issues any kid character does when brought into a movie geared towards adults. Violante Placido does a perfectly fine job looking fine, making it plainly obvious that she's basically another poorly-developed female character thrown into a male-driven action movie with very little actual purpose." — Edward Douglas, ComingSoon.net

The Final Word
"Like 'Ghost Rider: Low Voltage,' this is a surprisingly underpowered excursion into Marvel's mad world by Neveldine and Taylor. More purgatory than hellfire." — Helen O'Hara, Empire

Gleeks Show Their Love For Whitney Houston

whit2.jpg
Glee is dedicating their Valentine?s Day episode to Whitney Houston tomorrow night, according to E! Online. Although the show was shot before the singer?s death, the producers felt it appropriate because the episode features Mercedes (played by Amber Riley) singing Whitney?s iconic hit, ?I Will Always Love You.?

Coincidentally, Amber met Whitney for the first time on Thursday night, the same night the troubled singer seemed like she was on a bender at an LA nightclub. ?I didn?t need her to take a picture with me. I didn?t need an autograph,? she says. ?The fact that she even acknowledged that I was standing there was enough for me.?

On another tragic note, Whitney?s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, 18, was hospitalized for anxiety attacks twice in 12 hours following the shock of her mother?s untimely death. Her father, Bobby Brown, 43, skipped a New Edition reunion concert in Nashville to be by his ailing daughter?s side. ?Obviously the death of her mother is affecting her. However, we will get through this tragedy as a family,? Bobby tells Extra.

'Hunger Games': The Memes That Caught Fire

This week's Hobnobbing celebrates Seneca Crane's beard, Peeta's advice and more Web wonders.
By Amy Wilkinson

Wes Bentley as Seneca Crane in "The Hunger Games"
Photo: Lionsgate

Three years can feel like an eternity. That's how long "The Hunger Games" fans will have sat around sharpening their arrows between Lionsgate purchasing the film rights to Suzanne Collins' novel and the movie ultimately swooping into theaters March 23. But it's also been a productive 36 or so months for the series' acolytes, evidenced by the plethora of Panem-centric memes that have cropped up online to amuse, inform and enthrall.

From Seneca Crane's beard to Katniss' orange backpack, let's celebrate the things that have made this infernal wait a little less painful. (Special thanks to Twitter friends who sent in their recommendations.)

Seneca Crane's beard
Wes Bentley's flame-shaped fuzz was destined for Internet infamy. Following the debut of "The Hunger Games" full-length trailer, the stylized scruff seemed to be one of the hottest topics of conversation. A Facebook page (and insightful interview with Hollywood Crush) followed, proving the beard had staying power — even if it didn't stay on Bentley's face forever. "I would have loved to have kept the beard, but that beard took two hours to groom every day," he told MTV News. "It's such a cool look. Ve Neill, the makeup designer, did such an amazing job. It's exciting that it's getting that kind of attention."

Advice Peeta
Peeta is the wisest baker's son we know. Need proof? Take a gander at Advice Peeta, recommended by @TheHobOrg, where the disembodied head of Josh Hutcherson dispenses pithy platitudes and nuggets of wisdom. "Remember who the real enemy is: Panera," one reads, while another declares, "I set fireeeeeee to the bread." Aw, Peeta's an Adele fan! We knew it.

Lord Buttercup
District 12's male tribute isn't the only character pontificating online. Even Prim's mangy tomcat is getting in on the action. Similarly styled to Advice Peeta, Lord Buttercup, recommended by @mirandahakim, has plenty to say too, like "I am the Mockingjay. LOL JK I'm a cat." The busy feline also manages his own Twitter account, @LordButtercup. Because the revolution needs social-media-minded mongrels.

Effie's shoes
One of the newer (and perhaps less prevalent) memes, recommended by @HGgirlonfire, is a foot fetishist's best friend. Effie Trinket's gold booties (supposedly fashioned after an Alexander McQueen design) made their debut on the recently launched Capitol Couture. And our shoe envy will never be the same.

Katniss' orange backpack
Clearly, "Hunger Games" fans are a fashion-conscious bunch, because when the first "Hunger Games" teaser debuted, and it appeared Katniss' bright backpack had been replaced by a duller version, die-hards were not pleased. Thankfully, further peeks have confirmed that the fiery bag, which Katniss grabs at the beginning of the Games, is indeed a player. And, as recommended by @pikko, it continues to be celebrated on Facebook.

What's your favorite "Hunger Games" meme? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @amymwilk with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns!
