Anthony Hopkins On 'The Rite': 'I Know How To Scare People'

In new film, Oscar-winner plays unorthodox exorcist Father Lucas.
By Kara Warner

If Anthony Hopkins fans know anything, it's the fact that the Oscar-winner knows how to scare the pants off of moviegoers. The obvious, most-famous example is his award-winning turn as Dr. Hannibal Lecter in "Silence of the Lambs" and the subsequent sequels. It's been awhile since we've seen Sir Hopkins play dark and devious, but with the release of exorcism thriller "The Rite" on Friday (January 28), fans can reacquaint themselves with a bit of Hopkins' tricks and treats.

In the film, which is based on real-life events, Hopkins plays unorthodox exorcist Father Lucas. Without delving into spoiler territory — no more than what the creepy promotional posters give away — when MTV News caught up with the actor recently, we asked him to take us through his process of playing possessed.

Hopkins explained that most of his performances come from extensive preparation. For "The Rite," he learned Latin and Italian for certain scenes, and spent a lot of time alone in his hotel room going over the script.

"I would be there in my den, my man's cave, going over and over [the] script," Hopkins said. "Gradually, as you go through it over and over, all these voices and interpretations come to you," he explained, adding that by the time he was ready to film the key possession sequences, he knew the material so well he was open to improvisation.

"I put all kinds of very suggestive sexual stuff into it which they cut out, but stuff that would provoke people. I knew that the response was good because [director] Mikael Håfström's said, 'You're crazy.' "

Hopkins went on to say, with a smile, that he just knows how to "get people."

"I know how to do those parts," he said. "Not because I'm scary, but because I know how to scare people. ... It's a question of being quiet and not overplaying it," he explained. "You let the script and the audiences do the work for you. You don't have to play evil."

Jewel having a baby boy!

jewel.jpg Singer Jewel and her husband, Ty Murray, revealed they are having a baby boy! "We would have been happy either way, of course, but we are so excited to be having a little boy," she announced today. Rodeo champ Ty, on the other hand, seems like he has gotten his wish! "I have to admit, I was doing a little dance on our way out of the doctor's office when we found out!" The happily married couple, who eloped to the Bahamas in 2008, can finally start on the baby's room since they had been waiting to find out before they started decorating the guest room-turned-nursery in their Texas ranch. The country crooner reportedly had been trying for years to get pregnant and will finally be able to sing her famous lullabies to her new bundle of joy, due this summer. She is currently working on her second children's album, a follow up to Lullaby.

Cher Voices Frustration Over 'Burlesque' Oscar Song Snub

'We didn't get a nomination 4 best song! That sucks!' the icon tweeted about 'You Haven't Seen the Last of Me.'
By James Dinh

Cher in "Burlesque"
Photo: Sony Pictures

After the Academy Award nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, "Burlesque" star Cher made it clear she wasn't going to be celebrating with the nominees.

The icon wasn't pleased with the lack of recognition for her Diane Warren-penned tune "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" from the flashy musical, and she took to Twitter to express her frustration. While it was overlooked by the Academy, the "Burlesque" song recently scored a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

"We didn't get a nomination 4 best song ! That sucks ! Diane's song Is so beautiful !" Cher wrote. "It's hard to understand how u win." Then she referred to her Globes win: "The Golden Globe 4 BEST SONG & not even get nominated by the OSCARS? Oh well it is..what it is ,,,,the sun is still shining !"

Baffled by the snub, Cher even contemplated whether it was her role as the song's performer that impacted its Oscar odds, writing, "maybe she would have had a better chance if someone else was singing it ?!! IT JUST CANT B HER SONG I"

The Golden Globes are typically seen as a good forecast for the Oscars, but the awards aren't a guarantee of Oscar love. A handful of stars from Oscar-nominated movies weren't recognized by the Academy, including Mila Kunis ("Black Swan"), Andrew Garfield ("The Social Network") and Julianne Moore ("The Kids Are All Right").

Do you think Cher's "Burlesque" tune deserved an Oscar nomination? Tell us in the comments!

Kristen Stewart's 'Breaking Dawn' Vampire 'Scared' Elizabeth Reaser

'Twilight' co-star tells MTV News, 'I thought, 'This might not end well. She's looking pretty pissed right now.' '
By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Elizabeth Reaser
Photo: MTV News

PARK CITY, Utah — Ever since Kristen Stewart spilled the beans at the People's Choice Awards that she had been filming "Breaking Dawn" as a vampire that day, it's all we can think about when we get the chance to talk to one of her "Twilight Saga" co-stars.

Elizabeth Reaser, who plays Esme Cullen in the film franchise, teased at the Sundance Film Festival this week that there have been some crazy vampire scenes on set recently.

"There's been some really cool stuff in the Cullen house with Bella," Reaser revealed to MTV News. "There's been some interesting transformations happening."

Sounds to us like director Bill Condon has been filming the famous "Breaking Dawn" birthing scene, and that Reaser got a chance to see Bella's transformation into a vampire. Producer Wyck Godfrey already shared that the birthing scene will be shown from Bella's perspective to keep with the film's PG-13 rating, but as Reaser witnessed the whole scene unfold, what was her impression of Stewart's transformation?

"She scared me a little bit on Thursday, I'll be honest with you," Reaser said. "Because when vampires are newborns, they're stronger than any other vampires, so for a second there I thought, 'This might not end well. She's looking pretty pissed right now.' It was great."

Reaser's praise of Stewart's performance as vampire Bella matches with what co-stars Robert Pattinson and Peter Facinelli had to say about it at the Golden Globes. Pattinson told MTV News it felt like Stewart "wanted to do it the entire time."

"It's really funny, it's like a completely different environment on set when she's a vampire and when she's not," he said. "I think she's going to do it really well."

In the books, Bella becomes much more confident after transforming into a vampire, so it's fitting that Stewart is coming into her own with the role. Facinelli jokingly credited vampire contact lenses as the real reason Stewart is doing so much better.

"She's doing really well. She looks fantastic," Facinelli raved. "For some reason, once they put those contact lenses in, you look very statuesque."

Oscar Nominee James Franco Set To Direct 'As I Lay Dying'

The '127 Hours' star and Oscar host tells MTV News he'll helm movie based on William Faulkner's novel this summer.
By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

James Franco
Photo: MTV News

James Franco may very well be Hollywood's ultimate Renaissance man. In addition to his already busy 2011 schedule, which includes attending the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, both as first-time host and Best Actor nominee (for "127 Hours"), the actor/writer/student will also tackle directing duties.

Over the weekend, MTV News managed to catch a minute with Franco at the Sundance Film Festival, where he revealed to us yet another impressive future endeavor. The star spilled, "This summer I'm going to direct a movie based on William Faulkner's novel 'As I Lay Dying.' "

Franco, who has in the past done some work behind the camera, explained, "I shoot a test of the whole movie before I make a movie. So we just shot a test."

Despite working from a lengthy script (160 pages, to be exact), Franco did an entire pre-shoot with actors in North Carolina on New Year's Day. And in keeping with his already unorthodox methods, the 32-year-old noted that the actors he used for the test filming won't necessarily be the ones he works with on the final product.

While Franco says he "might" appear in his adaptation of "As I Lay Dying," he has his sights set on his favorite actor, "Boardwalk Empire" and "Revolutionary Road" star Michael Shannon, whom he has worked with twice before. The cast already includes Paul Dano ("Little Miss Sunshine," "There Will Be Blood") and, if all works out for Franco, Richard Jenkins ("The Visitor," "Six Feet Under") and Joaquin Phoenix will be onboard as well.

Taylor's heartbreak

Just weeks after dumping Taylor Swift, Jake Gyllenhaal seemed too cruel for words as he spent hours cozying up to her nemesis ? gorgeous actress Camilla Belle ? at the Grey Goose-sponsored Art of Elysium Heaven Gala in LA. ?Jake was sitting next to Camilla, and he was very chatty and flirty with her,? says a fellow partygoer at the January 15 event. Jake, who just a day later brought his ex-girlfriend, singer Jenny Lewis, to the Golden Globe Awards, has left Taylor more humiliated than ever. ?Beneath it all, Taylor is a hurt little girl,? a friend tells In Touch of the country cutie, who was devastated two years earlier when her boyfriend, Joe Jonas, left her ? reportedly for none other than Camilla. 'Avatar' Sequels Planned For December 2014, '15

Director James Cameron outlines his plan to shoot the sequels together.
By Aly Semigran

Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington in "Avatar"
Photo: 20th Century Fox

On James Cameron's watch, come 2014 and 2015, it will, in fact, be a blue, blue Christmas. The writer/producer/director, who was at the helm of 2009's Oscar-winning, box-office-record-breaking "Avatar," told Entertainment Weekly that fans of the big-screen digital breakthrough should expect its subsequent sequels within the next three to four years.

"I am in the process of writing the next two 'Avatar' films now," Cameron said. "We are planning to shoot them together and post them together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart."

Cameron said that the "current plan" is for the follow-ups to hit theaters by "Christmas '14 and '15." While the first "Avatar" took more than four years from inception to screen, Cameron told MTV News back in December 2009, "My next goal is to refine the technique, make it easier so it doesn't take as long."

"From the time we capture and finish the capture, it's literally nine to 10 months to get the CG characters working, to get their facial musculature working. ... So now we have Jake, we have Neytiri. Sam can step right back into it, the characters will fit them like a glove, and we'll just go on. So a lot of the start-up torque that had to be done for one movie really makes more sense if you play it out across several films," Cameron explained.

While the 56-year-old did not divulge on too many plot details for the "Avatar" sequels, he did confirm to EW that characters such as Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), should be expected to make a return. "Basically, if you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form," Cameron said.

After hinting that the sequels would take place in Pandora's ocean, Cameron spoke to MTV News last year about how he would make the new environment come to life. "I think what we should do there is — because we'll have to have characters that are in and under the water — is that we should actually capture them underwater," the "Titanic" director said.

And while Cameron's storyline may change from the first to the second and third films, it seems his purpose behind the project has stayed steadfast. "Fox has partnered with me to donate a chunk of the profits to environmental causes that are at the heart of the 'Avatar' world," he told EW. "I didn't want to make more 'Avatar' movies without a grander plan in place."

'No Strings Attached' Tops Weekend Box Office

Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher's romantic comedy comes in ahead of 'The Green Hornet.'
By Josh Wigler

"The Green Hornet" certainly has the crime-fighting action scene on lockdown, but when it comes to box-office supremacy, Seth Rogen's latest couldn't muscle up to Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher's "No Strings Attached."

The "Black Swan" actress returned to the romantic comedy arena this past weekend with "No Strings Attached," director Ivan Reitman's movie about a pair of longtime friends (Portman and Kutcher) who decide to add a few new benefits to their relationship. As the only major new release of the weekend, "No Strings Attached" had little trouble securing a first-place finish worth $20.3 million, despite facing a steady stream of mostly negative reviews.

Rogen and director Michel Gondry's "The Green Hornet" was no slouch, however, as the highly stylized buddy comedy continued to kick its way toward the top of the box office. In its second weekend in theaters, "Hornet" lost some of its sting to buzz into second place, adding $18.1 million to its continually growing pile. The film has earned $78.5 million worldwide, surpassing "Kick-Ass" as the highest-grossing live-action superhero comedy of all time, according to Box Office Mojo. Still, "Hornet" has some other milestones to reach before surpassing its reported $120 million production budget.

Rounding out the weekend's top five competitors were Ron Howard's "The Dilemma," now in its second week of release, followed by magnetic awards-season favorites "The King's Speech" and "True Grit" at $9.2 million and $8 million respectively.

The Box-Office Top Five

#1 "No Strings Attached" ($20.3 million)
#2 "The Green Hornet" ($18.1 million)
#3 "The Dilemma" ($9.7 million)
#4 "The King's Speech" ($9.2 million)
#5 "True Grit" ($8 million)

Upcoming Releases

Jason Statham teaches Ben Foster in the ways of "The Mechanic" next weekend, while Anthony Hopkins turns to his religious roots in "The Rite."

Alex Reid looks happy...

[Images: Mr Paparazzi/Big Pictures Words: Candi Kays]

Alex Reid looked seriously glum when he left Katie Price?s house in Sussex this afternoon.

The cage-fighter had a sullen expression on his face as he sped away in his dark blue BMW, making sure to flash his wedding ring at the cameras as he left.

But more to the point, what was he doing at Katie?s house anyway? Didn't she chuck him out and change the locks? We?re so confused, we can't keep up.

The Only Way Is Essex stars get their feet noshed off by fish?

[Images: Mr Paparazzi/Big Pictures Words: Samuel Nathan]

We?ve never really been tempted by the idea of getting our feet sucked off and nibbled at by tiny fish in order to leave them beautifully smooth and delicate.

Actually, let us rephrase that; we?ve never really been tempted by the idea of having TO PAY to have tiny fish suck our feet off ? this bunch of motley celebs - who were at ANESIS Luxury Fish Pedicure Spa last night (which we were just telling you about earlier) - however were probably lucky enough to get their fish treatments for absolutely free. Ah, the joys of being (mildly) famous.

Did it tickle, we wonder? Surely, surely. Meanwhile Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace seemed to have got the wrong end of the stick and ended up trying to suck off the fish. Jokes.

Exclusive: Elijah Wood Opens Up About His 'Hobbit' Role

'The way that it will fit in will not infringe upon the integrity of 'The Hobbit,' ' actor tells MTV News at Sundance.
By Eric Ditzian

Elijah Wood has long maintained that he'd never suit back up as Frodo Baggins — the role he pioneered in the Oscar-winning "Lord of the Rings" trilogy — in an adaptation of "The Hobbit" unless the appearance avoided gimmickry and fit within the larger context of J. R. R. Tolkien's legendary creation.

Well, now Wood is officially returning to Middle-earth, and in what might be his first public comments about the upcoming project, the 29-year-old actor told MTV News that, although Frodo was never in Tolkien's "Hobbit," the character's appearance in the movies makes sense for Jackson's adaptation.

"It's a very small piece, and I think that's the most appropriate," Wood said when we caught up with him at the Sundance Film Festival, where he was promoting "Fight for Your Right Revisited," a short film by Beastie Boys MC Adam Yauch. "Obviously, Frodo's not alive within the context of 'The Hobbit' piece. So I jumped at the chance to be a part of it and see everyone and have a little reunion. It'll be surreal."

While Wood didn't delve into detail about the exact nature of his role — rumor has it he'll appear in the beginning of each of the two films — he emphasized that Tolkien fans should not be worried.

"I'd heard about it a little while ago," he explained of the concept. "It's an idea that Fran [Walsh] and Peter and Philippa [Boyens], the writers, came up with. The way that it will fit in will not infringe upon the integrity of 'The Hobbit.' It'll fit and it'll be appropriate.

"It's just a gift," he added. "It's a gift to be able to go back to New Zealand. It's largely the same crew, the same creative team. It's seven years since we finished on the last film, and it's an opportunity to go back and have a reunion with everyone."

Check out everything we've got on "The Hobbit, Part 1."

Beyonce To Star In Clint Eastwood's 'A Star Is Born' Remake

Movie will be directed and produced by the Oscar winner.

Beyoncé Knowles is headed back to the big screen and into the familiar territory of playing an aspiring singer-turned-superstar. According to Deadline, Knowles will star in a remake of "A Star Is Born," to be directed and produced by Oscar winner Clint Eastwood for Warner Bros.

The remake will be the fourth telling of the "A Star Is Born" tale, the most memorable in recent years being the 1976 version with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson as star-crossed lovers of sorts. It is also worth mentioning that the producers of that film, Billy Gerber and Jon Peters, are also attached to this new project. It is said to be a full-on musical with production set to begin sometime in the fall.

Naturally, the plot details are under wraps, but the original story revolves around an aspiring singer who meets and falls in love with a troubled, failing former star who helps get the young ingénue her big break in the business.

No announcements have been made with regard to the male lead, but the report mentioned that major names like Will Smith, Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Hamm have been floated around.

It's definitely an interesting step for Knowles but not necessarily a surprise, given the fact that the majority of her film roles have been as singers ("Cadillac Records," "Dreamgirls," "The Fighting Temptations"). While many thought "Dreamgirls" would bring awards recognition for Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson's supporting role ended up garnering the most attention. With Oscar fave Eastwood at the helm of this new project, Knowles could be in line for some hardware yet.
